Meet Barry
Resident in Counseling - Practice Manager

"Everyone is capable of being comfortable with who they are, and we all have the potential to become who we want to be." Barry Vassar is a pre-licensed therapist and Practice Manager for Heart & Mind. Barry has a background and extensive training in trauma-informed care, attachment theory, and pathways of the brain. Barry served in law enforcement before his work in foster care prevention and counseling. He saw first-hand the effects of childhood trauma manifesting later in life as criminal behavior, which generally has roots in unresolved trauma. Barry saw a clear need to help criminals before they became criminals. He chose the path of the clergy for several years before becoming a counselor full-time. Barry's career as a counselor connects his experience on both ends of the social spectrum, from law enforcement to the clergy to counseling. His unique background gives him insight into the entire cycle of trauma from early childhood into adulthood and how individual trauma impacts the social system and health of the community overall. Barry believes that unresolved trauma, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders are common among most people and nothing to be ashamed of. He helps his clients face challenges in relationships, parenting, work, mental health, and other areas of life. He has accumulated experience in addiction & group counseling, trauma-informed care, marital/relationship skill building, and faith-based counseling.

THE WOMB

Join us at Regulation Revolution as we explore the fascinating world of co-regulation, starting in the womb.  Did you know that a baby’s nervous system is susceptible to more than just physical health and nutrition in the womb? It's also influenced by emotional health and stress levels, which greatly affect their developmental journey. We will dive deep into this topic and bring awareness to the importance of emotional health for both soon-to-be parents and newborns.

Episode 4

CO-REGULATION

Co-regulation hinges on the intricate dialogue between our nervous system and that of another—whether it's with a partner, friend, pet, or even the rhythmic cadence of music or the soothing sounds of nature like the ocean. The extent of co-regulation we experience during our formative years significantly shapes our ability to self-regulate later in life.

Explore the profound impact of interpersonal nervous system interactions and how your own nervous system activity can influence others. Delve into the ways co-regulation shapes a child's developmental trajectory and its ramifications for our interpersonal connections.

David Caruso

"It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence,

it is not the triumph of heart over head--

it is the unique intersection of both."
